Spitting Savagery

Last week ex-footballer and TalkSport pundit Stan Collymore closed his Twitter account due to racist abuse tweets and “some that are even more threatening”.  The next day two people were sent to prison for tweeting threats of rape and worse to Caroline Criado-Perez, who had campaigned for women to be featured on bank notes, and Labour MP Stella Creasy who helped her.

There have been calls for Twitter to do more to crack down on this vile behaviour, so far they have introduced a ‘report tweet’ button, but its effectiveness is debatable and they are still refusing to comment further, claiming they “…do not comment on individual accounts…”.

The question is whether any measures that are taken will actually change the situation? Presumably as long as there are people willing to behave in this way they will do anywhere they can, in particular on Twitter. So is there actually anything that can be done to tame this ferocious little bird?
